Sad and that's OKAY

It’s a gorgeous morning here in Los Angeles.

It’s Saturday. The weekend promises to be relaxing and wonderful!

Yet….a stupid misunderstanding with my husband sparked up an argument.

An argument between two people who hardly every argue.

And maybe the fact that we hardly ever argue is the reason why I felt doubly-sad 😔

I just wasn’t expecting this gorgeous day to start in this way.

I felt disappointed in him for not saying he was sorry for speaking to me the way he did.

I felt confused about why this was even happening.

I felt a bit angry with him for not understanding where I was coming from with my advice to him.

I sat at the breakfast table, with our kids, and him still in the other room.

I started crying. Silently crying.

My kids saw the tears running down my face and said “mommy are you crying?”….

“Yes I am”...

“And that’s okay”, I added.

Because YES it is OKAY.

After 20 years together, an occasional argument can very much happen. We’re only human after all! We are each allowed to our opinion, to our disagreements and to our own temper.

I have my story.

He has his story.

We have our story together.

And we each have our own THOUGHTS about it all.

So being SAD from time to time is OKAY.

It makes HAPPY possible!

Without sadness, we have no frame of reference for happiness.

But no one tells us that half of our lives is supposed to be negative emotions that make positive emotions possible.

And it’s because we believe we should be happy all the time, that we don’t welcome negative emotions, and that by resisting them, we attempt to numb ourselves with food, or alcohol, or porn, or drugs and more.

I do this very important work with my clients, but I also do this work with my kids.

Because YES it’s OKAY for mommy to cry 😢 and to feel sad sometimes. I make it a priority in the education I give them to teach them how to manage their emotions. Because no Harvard degree will ever teach you this. And if you want to function healthily and happily in our society, this is the ONLY WAY FORWARD.
